Yumeya Kimono Home Page - Vintage, Modern and Remake Kimono
The kimono is a traditional Japanese garment worn for important festivals or formal occasions in Japan. It is a formal style of clothing associated with politeness and good manners.
In 1985, Yoshiko opened Yumeya (or shop of Dreams) in Kofu, Japan, specializing in the repair and fitting of Japanese kimono as well as the creating of wedding dresses and clothing using kimono fabric. Our products are driven by her lifelong passion for the history and tradition of these elegant garments.
Yoshiko’s shop of Dreams now expanded to US online store by her daughter and associates. Kimono and Obi belts are much more than just a piece of “clothing”; it’s an art, and the fabric used on antique Kimono and Obi are carefully crafted in Japan.

This obi is a remake of vintage Obi and Shibori fabric, reversible, 100% Silk
Width: 6 inches
Length: 128 inches
Obi (帯, おび) is a sash for traditional Japanese Kimono.
The obi for men's kimono is rather narrow, 10 centimeters (3.9 in) wide at most, but a woman's おformal obi can be 30 centimeters (12 in) wide and more than 4 meters (13 ft.) long. The Obi itself does not keep the kimono closed; this is done by different under sashes (Koshi himo) worn underneath the obi. The obi itself often requires the use of stiffeners and ribbons for definition of shape and decoration.
There are many types of obi, most for women: wide obi made of brocade and narrower, simpler obi for everyday wear. The fanciest and most colorful obi are for young unmarried women and/or for weddings. The contemporary women's obi is a very conspicuous accessory, sometimes even more so than the kimono robe itself. A fine formal obi might cost more than the rest of the entire outfit.
Obi are categorized by their design, formality, material, and use. Informal obi are narrower and shorter.

It is to be worn in the taiko musubi style, and this Nagoya obi has patterns only in the part that will be most prominent in the knot. A Nagoya obi is shorter than other obi types. * Tachibana (English: Mandarin orange, botanical: Citrus tachibana) is an inedible citrus of approximately 6 to 13 ft. in height, grows in dense green branches with young thorns. In Japan, the leaves and fruit is used in floral motifs and adopted as family crests. Thought to be brought from the legendary eternal land, tachibana is emphasized in poetry for its evergreen leaves, fragrant blossoms, and jewel-like fruit lasting into winter. Though its flowers bloom "out of season", the leaves and fruit motif of tachibana is commonly seen on lined garments meant for the auspicious occasions like the New Year or Coming of Age.

ITAJIME
Itajime is a technique of physically resisting dye in order to create patterns.
This fascinating physical resist dye technique records a memory of the folds upon the cloth. As layers of dye interact, the edges bleed out in a subtle haze or leave a crisp line, showing the varied characteristics of the fiber and dyes.
The process involves folding the fabric carefully, then placing wood blocks on either side of the folded fabric. Pressure is then put on the blocks by using various methods of binding and clamping. By then immersing the bound fabric into the dye bath, the contrasting background creates a field out of which the luminous resist dyed shapes glow. The mirroring back and forth of the pattern creates a rhythm of pattern. This centuries old technique is thought to have originated in Japan.
Itajime is a laborious and physical dye process involving the elements fire and water, and requiring several days to complete the entire process. It can draw one in as the bold pattern seems to emit light.

100% Silk Vintage Furisode Kimono with Fukuro Obi Set.
A furisode (振袖, "swinging sleeves") is a style of kimono distinguishable by its long sleeves. Furisode are the most formal style of kimono worn by young unmarried women in Japan.
Fukuro obi (袋帯, "pouch obi") is the most formal obi actually used today. The fukuro obi has replaced the heavy traditional formal maru obi. Fukuro obi is made so that the part that will not be visible when worn is of smooth, thinner and lighter silk. When worn, a fukuro obi is almost impossible to tell from a traditional maru obi.
